Stop At: Zaanse Schans, Schansend 1, 1509 AW Zaandam The Netherlands

Escape the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam on a half-day guided tour of the Dutch countryside, starting with a 20-minute drive to the windmill village of Zaanse Schans. This outdoor conservation area is situated on the banks of the River Zaan and is home to original 18th and 19th century architecture, including several still functioning windmills & wooden houses.

Watch live demonstrations of craftsmen at work, including a clog maker crafting the famous wooden shoes of the Netherlands. There will be some free time to explore the village and a visit a windmill on your own, before travelling through the typical Polder-landscapes (reclaimed land from the water).

Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

Stop At: Kaaswaag Edam, Jan Nieuwenhuyzenplein 5, 1135 WT Edam The Netherlands

Edam’s ancient streets and tranquil canals are lined by beautiful 17th century buildings, including the leaning Carillon tower, the Big Church, and former town hall. Most famous in Edam beyond any doubt is the public weighing house, where every year in July and August still every Wednesday morning the famous Edam Cheese Market is held.

Walk during 40 minutes with your guide through this wonderful small city.

Stop At: Volendam Haven, Haven 43, 1131 EP Volendam The Netherlands

Finally, we will stop in the beautiful seaside village of Volendam. This typical fishing village with its bustling harbour has been a major tourist attraction as early as 1875. People come from all over the world to see the small and houses and learn about the locals with their traditions and traditional Dutch costumes. Your guide will take you on a short walk through the oldest parts of the village, exploring a labyrinth of twists and turns to sites such as St. Vincent’s Church, the wooden Stolphoevekerk and the Visafslag (Fish Auction) Also you can enjoy a walk on top of the Dike with a beautiful view of the IJssel-lake.

I would highly recommend taking this tour to give you a sense of what the Dutch countryside looks like. Each stop along the way truly allowed us to experience the traditional way of gouda cheese making (and tasting it), walking through the storybook-like town of Volendam, and the picturesque town of Edam. All along the way, our tour guide provided excellent commentary on the history of each stop so we were completely informed as to what we were seeing. The last stop was the outdoor museum at Zaanse Schans which featured a demonstration of clog making and provided plenty of opportunities to snap pictures of the windmills. I happened to come across the Bakery Museum which is so quaint inside while I sipped on hot chocolate and enjoyed a warm apple beignet. This tour was definitely a highlight of my trip to Amsterdam!

This was such a nice tour. I mostly enjoyed Edam. Volendam was nice. Zaanse Schans was too crowded, it was hard to enjoy the windmills. Especially being such a tourist location. The down side of the tour was that while your in Volendam and Edam especially, the tour doesnt give you enough time to really appreciate the beauty of these places. I was totally caught up with taking pictures, and enjoying the sceney that i would get left behind and miss all the explanation/background history of the area. I would recommend to the company to add nothef 30 mins to spending time in Edam. Other wise, great tour for all ages. Be sure to wear walking shoes also.

The commentary during the tour was quite interesting, particularly about the history of the areas, and seeing clog making. The downside was that everywhere we went was overwhelmed with tourist shops or extra charge, such as to see windmills..

It was a very nice experience, the guide was very helpful, the driver was very careful and gentle and the places we have visited were definitely worth -to- see!

Two of us did this tour in May 2019 and thoroughly enjoyed it. The cheese farm was great with the cheese tastings, watching the clogs being made - fascinating, would have liked a little more time in Volendam as it is so pretty. The tour guide was excellent and the information about the dykes and the windmills was fantastic. Would thoroughly recommend this to anyone who has not been to Holland.

The John the driver and Harold the tour guild were very good, I wish there was more time at fisherman villiage maybe another 15-30 minute but rest of tour stops were just right This tour was like walking through postcard. WONDERFUL TOUR.

Tour guide was Edgar. He was fun and friendly. Took really good care of us throughout the trip. It was great that he spoke many languages although it could be confusing at times when he switched from one to the other. I thought that this was an English only tour. I cant help wondering whether he could have provided more information on the places we went to if he wasnt translating in 3 different languages all the time. Great tour and guide and driver all the same.

This was an excellent day trip away from Amsterdam. We had a chance to see Dutch life and the beautiful countryside. Our guide was super informative, kid, and very accommodating. We had our children elementary aged who loved this excursion. Many beautiful sights and interesting aspects of Dutch culture to be learned. The stop in Edam was amazing and the cheese delicious. The Voldendam stop was nice, but really touristy. We wished we could have had more time in the little fishing village. Get a fresh fried cod fish sandwich and try the mini pancakes.
